HC Deb 04 March 1929 vol 226 cc50-1W
Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary the number of public conveyances which have failed to pass the necessary examination at Scotland Yard for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

During the twelve months ended 20th February, 1929, 1,486 public conveyances failed to pass the necessary examination on presentation for licensing. Many of these vehicles were subsequently brought up to the required standard and passed at a later date. Five cabs were totally rejected during the period and a number—roughly 200—were not presented for re-licensing as it had been intimated to the proprietors that it was very doubtful if a licence would again be granted.
