HC Deb 20 November 1928 vol 222 cc1559-60W
Colonel APPLIN

asked the Postmaster-General (1) whether he is aware that the only public telephone is inside the post office at South Mimms, and that this office is closed daily at 8 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on one day a week and altogether on Sundays; and if he will take steps to have a public telephone placed in a kiosk available for use at all reasonable hours;

(2) whether he is aware of the delay and inconvience caused to users of the public telephone at South Mimms by local calls having to go through a London exchange instead of a local exchange; and whether he will take steps to rectify this procedure?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

The public telephone at South Mimms, which is inside the post office, is at present available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each week-day, and from 9 to 10.30 on Sunday morning. Calls from this telephone are dealt with at the London Colnev Exchange which is connected to St. Albans exchange. I am considering the possibility of establishing a kiosk at South Mimms. I am not aware that calls from this call office suffer undue delay, but additional junction plant is being brought into use shortly at London Colney Exchange.
