HC Deb 20 November 1928 vol 222 c1553W
Mr. MAXTON

asked the Minister of Transport the cost of constructing the Glasgow-Edinburgh road; the number of men employed; the amount of the total cost spent on wages; and the amounts for other costs of construction?

Colonel ASHLEY

The total estimated cost of the new Glasgow-Edinburgh road is about £2,200,000, of which amount approximately £1,086,000 has already been expended. Out of this latter sum the amount paid to workmen by the contractors is, I am informed, about £494,000. I can, however, give no estimate of the further amount-indirectly paid in wages in the preparation of materials, etc., purchased by the contractors for the purposes of the work. The number of men now employed on the road is 800.
