HC Deb 23 May 1928 vol 217 c1903W
Mr. GOSLING

asked the Minister of Transport if his attention has been called to the numerous accidents, many of them fatal, on the London-Southend road; and whether, seeing that these casualties are largely due to the narrowness of the road and its incapacity to carry the volume of traffic thrust upon it, and that the ground acquired was levelled for the whole but only half has been made up, he will consider the advisability of making up the other track next winter?

Colonel ASHLEY

Although I am aware of the accidents to which the hon. Member refers, I do not agree that they can be attributed to the cause he names. The road has been taken over by the local authorities concerned, and I should be prepared to consider carefully any application they may make for assistance towards the construction of the second carriageway on particular portions of the road when the needs of traffic so require. I may add that I have already offered a grant towards this work on a section of the road in Ilford.
