HC Deb 19 December 1928 vol 223 cc3029-30W
Sir H. CROFT

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether there has been a variation in the prices of British silk and artificial silk since the duties were imposed, and in musical instruments since the duties were reimposed; and, if so, whether he can give the variations?

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

As regards artificial silk yarn, there are many grades and makes, but in general it would appear that prices have fallen since June, 1925, by 25 per cent. or rather more. There appears also to have been a reduction in price of British natural-silk goods, but on account of their variety I fear I cannot give any useful estimate of the general change in prices. I understand that the average price reduction since June, 1925, on some 20 models of British pianos is about 20 per cent.
