HC Deb 11 December 1928 vol 223 cc1944-5W
Sir R. THOMAS

asked the Postmaster-General the number of horse vans and electric vans, respectively, in use by his Department in the Metropolitan area; how the two forms of transport compare in service and cost; and whether, in view of the greater obstruction to other traffic caused by horse vans, it is his intention ultimately to replace them entirely by electric vehicles in London?

Viscount WOLMER

There are about 270 horse mail vans at present in use under contract in the London Postal area. No electric vans are as yet in service, but seven will shortly be brought into use experimentally on services at present performed by foot postmen. Until the result of the experiment is known, I am unable to make any statement with regard to future policy.
