HC Deb 14 February 1927 vol 202 cc589-90W
Major SALMON

asked the Postmaster-General the number of post offices in the Administrative County of London at which telegraphic business can be transacted; and the number of offices at which telegraphic business can be transacted after 7 p.m., after 8 p.m., and all night, respectively?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

It will perhaps meet the desire of my hon. and gallant Friend if I give the numbers applicable to the London Postal area, which roughly corresponds with the Administrative County of London, but in some districts extends beyond it. Considerable labour would be involved in extracting the figures for the Administrative County.

Number of Postal Telegraph Offices 572 Of these Offices

(a) the number open for telegraphic business after 7 p.m. but not after 8 p.m. is 139
(b) the number open for telegraphic business after 8 p.m. but not open all night is 3
(c) the number open all night is 2
There are in addition 89 telegraph offices at railway stations, of which
  • the number in class (a) is 35
  • the number in class (b) is 42
  • the number in class (c) is 6.
A telephone subscriber in London can telephone a telegram to the Central Telegraph Office for onward transmission at any time of the day or night, as can also any member of the public from over 400 telephone kiosks in the London Telephone area.
