asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs what conditions must be fulfilled by British migrants to Canada to entitle them to the £3 sea-passage rate; how many persons have travelled at that rate during each of the last two years; whether there is any intermediate rate between the full rate and the £3 rate; and, if so, what conditions attach to it?

Mr. AMERY

Assisted passages to Canada at the reduced £3 rate are granted in approved cases to men intending to take up work upon the land, and to single women intending to take up household work. Applicants may be selected by the Dominion or Provincial Governments, or their agents, or

Information as to the sexes of migrants to Canada during 1926 and of juvenile migrants to Australia and New Zealand in 1923 is not yet available.

nominated by private residents in Canada, or by a recognised organisation. The dependants of men who are already engaged in agricultural work in Canada are eligible, as also are the families who proceed under the 3,000 Families Settlement Scheme. The number of persons who received assisted passages at the reduced rate during 1925 was 8,803, and during the first nine months of 1926, 18,943. There is no intermediate rate between the £3 rate and the full ocean passage rate.
