HC Deb 15 February 1926 vol 191 cc1559-60W
Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Prime Minister if, before deciding on the imposition of import duties on wrapping paper, he will take into consideration the opposition to such duties of the London Chamber of Commerce, and to the fact that the British paper mills making writing and printing papers are paying good dividends, employing a large number of workers, and are in no need of protection?

The PRIME MINISTER

All relevant considerations have been taken into account by the Government. I should like to call the hon. Member's attention to a speech made at the Mansion House on 15th December last, in which the President of the Association of Chambers of Commerce made it clear that the opposition expressed at the inquiries of Committees under the Safeguarding of Industries procedure does not represent the view of the London Chamber of Commerce, but only that of a section of the Chamber.
