HC Deb 11 February 1926 vol 191 c1273W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of applications received for compensation for civilian damages suffered in the War, and the total sum claimed; the number of claims passed, the sums claimed, and the amount actually paid; whether any balance remains in the fund; and, if so, what is the amount?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I have been asked to reply. The number of completed claims for compensation received and dealt with in connection with the funds voted by Parliament for reparations so far total 95,534, being 65,659 against the £5,000,000 compensation fund, and 29,875 against the £300,000 fund provided for solatia to belated claimants. In addition, there are some 2,000 claimants against the latter fund who have as yet failed to return the forms issued to them. The number of claims admitted to rank against the £5,000,000 fund to date is 45,402, and against the £300,000 fund 25,102, in respect of which the sums of £4,591,154 and £283,872 have been paid respectively. There remain so far undistributed £408,846 out of the £5,000,000 fund, and £16,128 out of the £300,000 fund. It is not possible to state, even approximately, the total of the amounts chimed, since, in a very large number of cases, no amount is specified.
