HC Deb 11 February 1926 vol 191 cc1273-5W
Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can state approximately the gross assessed income for Income Tax purposes for the current year, together with the actual income of those liable to Income Tax, including those relieved by the operation of abatements and allowances, and the income on which tax is actually payable; and will he state the corresponding figures for last year?

Mr. R. McNEILL

The information asked for will not be available for the current year for some considerable time. With the hon. Member's permission, I will circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT particulars of the gross and actual income for the years 1923–24 and 1924–25. The figures for the year 1924–25 are provisional estimates only as it is not yet possible to give final figures for that year.

The figures for 1923–24 and 1924–25 are as follow:

1923–24. 1924–25. (Estimates).
£ £
Gross income brought under review. 2,912,820,757 2,900,000,000
Actual income liable to tax (before deduction of personal allowances, etc.). 2,303,308,424 2,310,000,000
Taxable income 1,322,793,108 1,340,000,000

Sir M. CONWAY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to the recent decision of the House of Lords in the Brighton College case; and what steps he proposes to take to relieve educational institutions from the burden which is imposed upon them by that decision?

Mr. R. McNEILL

The decision to which my hon. Friend refers did not impose any fresh burden upon educational establishments, but merely reaffirmed the view of the law which has consistently prevailed. The institutions which, I think, my hon. Friend has in mind already enjoy a considerable measure of relief from Income Tax as charities, but I see no ground for a further extension of their privileges.
