HC Deb 10 February 1926 vol 191 cc1053-4W
Mr. HARDIE

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the custom in working-class families for sons on reaching a certain age to pay a fixed sum to the mother and save the remainder of wages generally for marriage; and will he take this into consideration when calculating the total income of a household when investigating income for the purposes of Employment Exchange benefit applications?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

In assessing family income the committees are entitled to take all relevant circumstances into account; but. I do not think I ought to direct them to allow a general deduction on the ground suggested by the hon. Member.
