asked the Minister of Health the total amount advanced in 1924 and 1925, respectively, under the Workmen's Dwelling Act; and how many houses would this represent in each year?

Information is not available showing the actual amounts advanced by local authorities during the years in question to owner-occupiers and others for house purchase and erection, but the amounts of loans sanctioned by my Department to local authorities for the purpose of making these advances were as follow:—

£ £
(a) Under the Small Dwelling Acquisition Act, 1899. 4,600,427 6,435,145
(b) Under Section 92 of the Housing Act, 1925. 2,494,179 4,116,442
7,094,606 10,551,587
It is not practicable to state with any degree of accuracy the number of houses represented by these figures.

During the nine month ended 30th September, 1925, local authorities—

(a) made advances under the Small Dwelling Acquistion Act in respect of 9,461
(b) made advances under Section 5 of the Housing, etc., Act, 1923, in respect of 5,748
