HC Deb 04 February 1926 vol 191 c341W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that the British Consul-General at Tangier has requested Captain Gordon Canning, the peace envoy of Ab-del-Krim, to leave Tangier; by whom the British Consul-General was instructed to issue such a request; and for what reasons the instructions were given?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

No instructions were issued to His Majesty's Consul-General at Tangier to request Captain Gordon Canning to leave Tangier. Captain Canning recently appealed to Mr. Clive for advice as to his best course in the difficulties in which he had become involved. Mr. Clive advised him to leave and he decided to do so. The Secretary of State approves and takes full responsibility for Mr. Clive's action.
