HC Deb 04 February 1926 vol 191 cc361-2W
Mr. T. SHAW

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons insured against unemployment on the last day of December, 1919 to 1925, inclusive?

Mr. BETTERTON

The number of persons (including those under special schemes) insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts in Great Britain is estimated annually in connection with the exchange of unemployment books in July of each year. Figures for the month of December are, consequently, not available. The published estimates of past years have recently been revised in the light of later knowledge, and the revised estimates of numbers insured from July, 1921, onwards are as follow:

July, 1921 11,081,000
July, 1922 11,181,000
July, 1923 11,232,000
July, 1924 11,404,000
July, 1925 11,623,000
Figures for the years 1919 and 1920 relate only to the comparatively limited number of persons insured under the Acts of 1911 and 1916, and are not comparable with those for later years.
