HC Deb 04 August 1926 vol 198 c3022W
Mr. HAYES

asked the Home Secretary, whether he proposes to give effect to the recommendations of the Mackenzie Report respecting the prison strikers?

Captain HACKING

The recommendation was that the Prison Commission should be given discretion to make ex-gratia payments to prison warders who were strikers. The position of the prison warders who make no payments towards their pensions is different from that of the police who are subject to rateable deductions, and my right hon. Friend decided—with regret—that he could not justify the making of ex-gratia, payments to men dismissed for refusing duty.
