HC Deb 04 August 1926 vol 198 cc3021-2W

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that certain firms of caterers are now opening their shops on Sundays, and that they are seeking to compel their employés to take their share in Sunday labour, in disregard of the objections on conscientious grounds which many of the young women have to work on Sunday, whereby such persons are liable to dismissal; and whether, consequent on his action, he will take steps to secure that no employé shall suffer as a result of a refusal to take her share in Sunday labour?

The Home Office does not appear to have received any representations on this subject. The Home Secretary sympathises with the view expressed by my hon. and learned Friend, but if, as I understand, no contravention of the law is involved, I do not see how it would be possible to take any steps in the direction suggested.
