§ Sir J. PENNEFATHERasked the President of the Board of Trade if he can give the figures of emigration from Great Britain to the United States of America for the years 1922 and 1923, and for the years 1924 and 1925; and any reasons for the decline during the latter period.
Mr. SAMUEL:The British subjects recorded as leaving permanent residence 731W in Great Britain to take up permanent residence in the United States numbered 34,826 in 1922 and 79,495 in 1923; the corresponding figures for 1924 and 1925 were 15,838 and 26,682. The decrease in 1924 and 1925 is, no doubt, mainly due to the operation of the United States Immigration Restriction Laws. The filling of the 1923–24 quota in the autumn of 1923, both increased the total recorded for 1923 and reduced that for 1924. Since 1st July, 1924, the numbers of emigrants to the United States have varied little from quarter to quarter.
