Mr. EVANS DAVIESasked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the inadequate grant now paid to local authorities for second-class roads; and whether he proposes to take steps to increase the amount as being one way of helping to lessen unemployment?
§ Colonel ASHLEYI have received representations that all grants are inadequate, but I have not observed that pleas on behalf of Class II roads have been urged with exceptional frequency. In cases where widening works, etc., on Class II roads are expedited for the relief of unemployment, it has been my policy to make grants upon the percentage basis applicable to Class I roads.
