§ Mr. COOPER RAWSONasked the Minister of Transport whether he proposes to introduce a Bill during next Session to secure that any road in an administrative county in England and Wales which has not been designated a main road, but which he has declared to be a Class 1 road, shall ipso facto become a main road?
§ Colonel ASHLEYThis is a point which needs to be considered in its relation to other aspects of local government, and I do not think that it would be desirable to legislate on it separately. I would remind my hon. Friend that it is open to any highway authority to apply to the county council for an Order, under Section 15 of the Highways and Locomotives (Amendment) Act, 1878, declaring any suitable highway within their district to be a main road. Under these provisions considerable lengths of roads which have been included in Class 1 have already been declared to be main roads, and proposals for similar action in further cases are, I understand, under consideration.
