§ Colonel DAYasked the Minister of Transport if he will cause a special investigation to be held respecting the serious and dangerous increase of heavy traffic at the area of the Elephant and Castle, S.E.; whether he is aware that at this point there is generally a procession of omnibuses and other heavy vehicles, thus preventing safe passage across the road; and whether he will con- 2052W sider the imposition of a special speed limit within the area of this dangerously congested spot?
§ Colonel ASHLEYAs I informed the hon. and gallant Member on the 9th March, the traffic conditions in the immediate neighbourhood of the Elephant and Castle are the subject of investigation by the London Traffic Advisory Committee at the present time. The improvement of traffic conditions at this point presents considerable difficulties, and I do not think that I can take any action pending the receipt of the Committee's advice in the matter. I may say, however, that in my opinion the enforcement of a special speed limit in this area would be almost impossible.
