asked the Postmaster-General the wages and hours of the sub-post office assistants at Craigellachie, Cullen, Wooler, Scourie, and Dunragit?

Mr. HARTSHORN

At Craigellachie two assistants receive wages of 23s. and 21s. a week respectively and work 7½ hours daily. At Cullen the assistant is paid 20s. 11d. and works 46½ hours a week. At Wooler two assistants are paid 20s. and 15s. respectively, and their normal attendance is 8 hours a day. Both these assistants have been engaged within the last six weeks. At Scourie the assistant is paid £20 a year, with free board and lodging, and she works from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with intervals for meals. At Dunragit the assistant is a relative of the sub-postmistress, and the remuneration and hours of attendance are a matter of family arrangement.
