HC Deb 04 March 1924 vol 170 c1205W
Sir GRATTAN DOYLE

asked the President of the Board of Trade what action the Government proposes to take regarding the decree issued by the French Government prohibiting the export of fresh vegetables from France until 1st May; to what cause he ascribes such order; and, if in view of the resulting rise in the cost of living, he will open up negotiations with other countries in order to make up the difference?

Mr. WEBB

As regards the first and third parts of the question, I am not aware of any action which His Majesty's Government could usefully take in the matter. As regards the second part, I have no information. The prohibition is not absolute, and it has been notified that certain vegetables will be allowed to be exported on payment of an export duty of 10 per cent.ad valorem.
