HC Deb 21 July 1924 vol 176 cc901-2W
Sir J. MARRIOTTM

asked the Minister of Health whether the parents of a patient detained in a lunatic asylum are, by Regulation, denied access to, or communication with, the patient if the wife of the patient raises objection to such communication?

Mr. WHEATLEY

I am not aware of any such Regulation. The question of allowing the friends or relatives of a patient to visit or of withholding communications addressed to a patient is entirely within the discretion of the medical superintendent of the mental hospital, who would be guided by the opinion he would form as to whether such visits or communications would be likely to have a detrimental effect on the patient's mental condition.
