HC Deb 21 July 1924 vol 176 cc905-6W
Mr. DARBISHIRE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he has under consideration the election of European members of the Federal Council in the Malay States other than by nomination of the High Commissioner of the Federated Malay States?

Mr. THOMAS

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. DARBISHIRE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that a committee, consisting of officials and unofficial members of the Federal Council in the Federated Malay States, recently reported in favour of a Workmen's Compensation Bill; and whether legislation to this end is to be introduced in the Council, and when?

Mr. THOMAS

I have no information on the subject, but I will make inquiry of the High Commissioner.

Mr. DARBISHIRE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if, in view of the fact that the High Commissioner of the Federated Malay States some time ago undertook to increase the Chinese representation on the Federal Council from one to two members, he can say when the change is to be carried into effect?

Mr. THOMAS

The nomination of a second Chinese member will take place shortly, if it has not already been made.
