HC Deb 21 July 1924 vol 176 cc896-7W
Mr. LANSBURY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India what is the total number of British troops at present serving in India and the total number of Indian troops serving in British India; and will he give the comparative figures for the years 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1918, together with the total number of Indians serving as officers with the British and Indian Armies in India?

Mr. RICHARDS

The following statement shows the comparative strength of British and Indian troops in India on the dates indicated, and the number of Indians holding Viceroy's commissions and King's commissions:

During the period of the War, and for some time after, the numbers of British and Indian troops were in a constant state of flux, and it is, therefore, impossible to give even approximately accurate figures for these years.
