§ Mr. RHYS DAVIESasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the council for the Borough of Greenwich has informed the tenants' association occupying State-assisted houses that it has received a Circular from the Ministry requesting the council to establish an economic rent for those houses; whether he will place a copy of that Circular upon the Table of the House; whether he is aware that an economic rent for such houses is about 300 to 400 per cent. above the rent for similar accommodation in 2586W 1914; and whether, in view of the prohibitive charge of an economic rent to the average tenant, he can make a statement on the subject?
§ Mr. NEVILLE CHAMBERLAINThe answer to the first question is in the affirmative. The Circular mentioned is one which was issued by my Department at the inception of the assisted housing scheme in 1919. I am sending a copy of it to the hon. Member, but I do not think it necessary now to publish it further. I understand that there is no question of increasing the rents which are being charged by the borough council.
