§ Mr. W. THORNEasked the First Commissioner of Works whether he is aware that men engaged upon regular departmental work at Greenwich Park are being paid 39s. 1d. for a working week of 47½ hours, and that this rate is considerably below the district rate for similar work; and whether he will give instructions that advantage is not to be taken of the fact that the men now engaged upon this work were formerly unemployed?
§ Sir J. BAIRD:The rate of pay is 40s. 3d. a week, which is 75 per cent. of the usual Royal Parks rate; it is the rate paid to men on relief works who are out of employment, and who are not specially selected for this class of work.
