HC Deb 26 April 1923 vol 163 cc707-8W
Mr. PETO

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been called to the fact that pure water bottled at the spring is now dutiable under the term table water at 8d. per gallon; and whether, in order that pure water should be free of tax, he will consider altering the description table waters to aerated or manufactured table water?

Mr. BALDWIN

I am advised that natural waters are liable to Table Water Duty if sold in bottle, provided that they are not solely used as a medicine. I regret that I am unable to adopt the suggestion contained in the last part of the question.

Viscount SANDON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will, under the new circumstances, withdraw his Budget concession to the mineral water industry; and, if so, how he intends to use the funds thus saved?

Mr. BALDWIN

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the statement made on the 23rd April by the Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
