HC Deb 26 April 1923 vol 163 c707W
Mr. HURD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the detailed figures on which he bases his statement that, during the War, the direct taxpayer was called upon to pay 80 per cent. of the revenue raised?

Mr. BALDWIN

The hon. Member will find that of the tax revenue of £1,400 millions in the two years 1917–18 and 1918–19, £1,134 millions, or over 80 per cent., was raised by direct taxes.
