asked the Secretary for Scotland what is the total number of children being taught in schools throughout Scotland, and the total number of teachers employed; what is the average cost of education per child per annum for 1921; and what are the corresponding figures for 1923?

The average number of children on the registers of day schools under the management of education authorities in Scotland during the year ended 31st July, 1920, was 856,713. The returns for the year ended 31st July, 1921, have not yet been finally adjusted. The number of recognised teachers in full time employment on 31st March, 1921, was 24,522. The average cost of education per child in schools under the management of education authorities for the year ended 15th May, 1921, was £13.03. The corresponding cost per child for the year 1913–14 was £5.74.
