HC Deb 04 December 1922 vol 159 cc1238-9W

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that if the presnet proposed cut in the pay of the temporary staffs in the Government Departments is enforced, it will be the second reduction to be enforced without agreement and without arbitration; and whether, in view of the desir- ability of the Government setting a good example to private employers, he will agree to the present proposed reduction being submitted to arbitration?

No second reduction is now being enforced. In making the reduction decided upon in August last it was provided, in the interests of the staff, that to the extent of one half its operation should be postponed till the 1st instant. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the right hon. Member to my reply to a similar question put by the hon. Member for Bedwelty (Mr. C. Edwards) on Wednesday, 29th November last.
