HC Deb 30 May 1921 vol 142 cc617-8W
Sir E. WILD

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many inspectors he has dismissed for neglect of their statutory duties by certifying in writing unfit horses for shipment to the Continent; what are the names of such dismissed inspectors; whether criminal proceedings have been taken, or are contemplated, against them; and, if not, why not?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

The names of the three veterinary inspectors whose employment under the Ministry has been discontinued are:—

  • Mr. W. Longhurst,
  • Mr. T. P. Young,
  • Mr. A. Wilkinson.
They committed errors of judgment as to the fitness of certain horses to travel and work, but they did not commit any offence in respect of which criminal proceedings could be instituted.

Mr. HOOD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can say anything further with regard to the negotiations with European countries as to the worn-out-horse traffic, and whether he has come to any decision upon the representations made by a number of societies in favour of the imposition of an export tax upon horses?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

The future policy with regard to the export trade in horses cannot be definitely settled until the negotiations which are now proceeding in Paris between representatives of the Belgian and Dutch Governments and the Ministry have been concluded.
