HC Deb 20 June 1921 vol 143 c910W
Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that during the destruction of the property of Miss Madge Daly, near Limerick, on 9th April, a statement was read by an officer that this destruction was ordered because she did not give notice of an ambush in John Street, Limerick, the previous day; that no accusation was made in that Proclamation that the house was a haunt of rebels; and that Miss Madge Daly was absent in Dublin when both the ambush and the destruction took place?

Mr. HENRY

I am informed by the Commander-in-Chief that the Daly family are well known to be extremists, and that their record for sedition is bad. If Miss Madge Daly, the person named by the officer who read the official communication, was away from home at the time, her sister, Miss Una Daly, was present, and the military authorities have not the slightest doubt that she had knowledge of the murderous attack on Crown forces, planned and carried out in the vicinity. The Commander-in-Chief is satisfied that the military governor was entirely justified in selecting the Daly's house for destruction.
