HC Deb 18 April 1921 vol 140 c1553W
Mr. HOOD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of the net receipts for duties on imported cigars for the financial years 1918–19, 1919–20, and 1920–21, respectively?

Lieut. - Commander YOUNG

The amount of the net receipts for duties on imported cigars for each of the financial years in question was:—

Revenue.
Financial year ended £
31st March, 1919 594,000
31st March, 1920 859,000
31st March, 1921 325,000

Mr. HOOD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the value of the imports of cigars from Cuba for the three months ended 31st March, 1920, was £650,788, and for the three months ended 31st March, 1921, was only £17,625; and whether he can explain the enormous falling off in the imports?

Lieut. - Commander YOUNG

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the causes of the decline I would ask my hon. Friend to await the Budget discussions.
