HC Deb 29 November 1920 vol 135 cc954-5W
Mr. BRIANT

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the total number of loads of coniferous timber and pit wood imported into this country in 1913; and what percentage came from Russia?

Sir R. HORNE

The recorded imports of hewn and sawn fir during 1913 amounted to 6,980,000 loads, of which 3,658,000 loads, or 52.4 per cent., were recorded as consigned from Russia. The imports of pit props or pit wood in 1913 amounted to 3,451,000 loads, of which 1,539,000 loads, or 44.6 per cent., were consigned from Russia. A large part of these imports in 1913 came from Finland and ether Baltic States which are now independent of Russia and open to trade.
