HC Deb 29 April 1920 vol 128 c1438W
Major ENTWISTLE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how many steam trawlers were taken over from Hull by his Department during the War, how many have since been returned, how many are still under his control, and how many have been sunk; and if any compensation is being made to the owners?

Sir J. CRAIG

309 trawlers were taken on Charter, at Hull, during the War. Of this number 244 have since been returned to owners; 5 remain on Admiralty Charter, and 60 were sunk. As regards the last part of the question, under the terms of the Charter on which trawlers were requisitioned for naval service, compensation is payable in the case of vessels which have been sunk on the basis of market value at the time of loss.
