HC Deb 11 November 1919 vol 121 cc246-7W
Mr. HOGGE

asked the Food Controller how much whisky has been landed in this country from Canada and the United States of America since the embargo was raised; whether any of this whisky has been duty paid and is being sold as Canadian or American whisky; whether any of it is being mixed with Scottish or Irish whisky and sold as such; and, if so, whether he proposes to protect the public by penalising the sale of such whisky unless it is clearly stated what it is?

Mr. ROBERTS

I am afraid that it is not possible to give the figure for which the hon. Member asks, as whisky is not distinguished from other spirits in the official records of the Board of Customs and Excise; and whisky coming from Canada and the United States is placed in bond, on arrival, under the head of "spirit" only. As regards the last part of the question, the public are protected by the provision of the Spirits (Prices and Description) Order, which prescribes varying prices in accordance with the strength of the spirits sold.
