HC Deb 04 June 1919 vol 116 c2041W
Mr. CROOKS

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware of the discontent existing among London teachers and teachers generally regarding their pay and conditions of service; and whether, in view of the effect of this discontent in the teaching profession, he can take any steps, by inquiry or otherwise, to remove the causes and secure a properly paid and contented teaching staff?

Mr. FISHER

I am aware that in some areas, including London, a final agreement between the teachers in elementary schools and the local education authority has not yet been reached. Large increases of salary have recently been made or are being made in most cases, and scales of salary are being adopted which generally follow the principles suggested in the Report of the Departmental Committee. I am always ready to do what I can to promote a settlement of questions in dispute, and sun watching the position carefully, but I doubt whether more formal intervention on my part would be opportune.
