§ Mr. RAMSDENasked the First Lord of the Admiralty what reduction has been made in the staff of his Department since the Armistice?
1972W
§ Dr. MACNAMARAThe total number of civilian staff (excluding messengers and charwomen) employed by the Admiralty on the 11th November last was 8,044; there are now 7,415, showing a net reduction of 629. The gross reduction was in point of fact 910, but there have been 281 new entries rendered necessary by the increased work in the Accountant-General's Department—payment of War gratuities, increases in children's separation allowances, and so on—and in connection with reconstruction and demobilisation problems.
