§ Mr. RENWICKasked the Minister of Food whether any steps are being taken to check the import of meat, timber, wheat, and other produce into this country in larger quantities than can be dealt with by the dock and harbour authorities; and whether such produce imported from the United States and Argentine is largely responsible for the adverse exchange against us in those countries?
§ Mr. McCURDYThe adjustment of imports in relation to dock and harbour facilities is kept under careful consideration by the various Departments of the Government concerned. As regards the second part of the question, any reduction in imports from the United States and the Argentine would undoubtedly tend to improve the exchange position of the United Kingdom. Both the situation at the docks and the effect upon foreign exchanges are factors which always receive the closest consideration in connection with the importation of foodstuffs.
