Mr. DOYLEasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council last week passed a resolution making urgent representation to the Government that, owing to the cessation of donation pay for civilian unemployed, the distress in the city will be greatly aggravated, and calling upon the Government to take immediate steps to find work, or adequate allowances pending the prevision of work, for those thrown out of work through no fault of their own; and what steps, if any, he proposes to take to give effect to it?

As stated in reply to similar questions last week, the general question of relieving distress due to unemployment has been receiving constant consideration, and active steps are 83W being taken with a view to making the National Relief Fund available for this purpose.
