HC Deb 11 December 1919 vol 122 c1655W
Mr. WIGNALL

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that the present arrangement of part of the canal system remaining uncontrolled, leading to labour difficulties, is likely to result in interruption of traffic; and whether, in view of the congestion of transport and its effect upon the trade of the country, he has considered the question of taking over the whole of the canal systems on the same basis as the railways?

Mr. NEAL

I cannot agree with the suggestion made in the first part of the question. With regard to the second part, as was explained to the hon. Member for the Chertsey Division of Surrey on 8th December, the whole question of the future of canals is being investigated so that a complete policy can be formulated, but it is not intended to extend control to the undertakings in question.
