asked the President of the Board of Trade the principal uses to which the chief kinds of coal produced in each coalfield are put?


Generally speaking, coal produced in all coalfields can be used for most purposes, but certain of the fields produce coal more suitable for specific purposes. For example, Durhamcoal is largely consumed by gas works, and South Wales coal for steam raising.
