§ Sir A. GEDDESThe shifts worked by the different classes of men engaged in the mining industry vary considerably, but the customary number for hewers on the day shift in the following districts may be:
- Scotland—10 to 11 a fortnight.
- Northumberland and Durham—11 a fort-night.
- North Wales, Lancashire and the Midlands and South Wales—12 a fortnight.
With regard to other classes of workmen engaged on afternoon and night shifts, the general practice is to work five shifts per week.
