HC Deb 21 March 1918 vol 104 cc1218-9W
Mr. MILLAR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller if he can state the tonnage which will be released as a result of the new restrictions on the output of beer, and the loss of tonnage still involved through the continued manufacture of intoxicants?

Sir L. CHIOZZA MONEY

As I informed my hon. Friend on 5th February, the total prohibition of brewing as compared with an output of 15,000,000 standard barrels would result in a net estimated saving of 575,000 tons. This figure allowed for the loss of feeding-stuffs, and assumed that these had to be replaced by other imports. The new restrictions, presuming that the standard barrelage remains at 12,590,000 for twelve months, will, I understand, yield a saving or 200,000 tons. This result is arrived at by various economies which were not allowed for in arriving at the figure of 575,000 tons given in the former reply. The tonnage equivalent of the materials to be used in brewing 12,590,000 barrels is, approximately,. 512,000 tons.
