HC Deb 21 February 1918 vol 103 c934W
Mr. BROOKES

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether a large food ship was recently sunk in the Channel almost at the conclusion of her voyage; and whether further steps can be taken to ensure, particularly at the present moment, the safety of such vessels when they have almost completed their journeys?

Dr. MACNAMARA

A ship with a general cargo, about 50 per cent. of which was foodstuffs, was recently sunk when nearing the conclusion of her voyage. This vessel was under escort at the time. With regard to the second part of the question, the necessity of safeguarding such vessels is fully realised, and all possible steps are taken to this end.
