HC Deb 21 February 1918 vol 103 c953W
Sir W. COLLINS

asked the Minister of Labour whether a Committee to inquire into the actual increase in the cost of living has been appointed; if so, what are its reference and composition; and whether any changes have been made in the mode of stating the cost of living based on retail food prices, with and without economies, etc., in the monthly issues of the ''Labour Gazette"?

Mr. G. ROBERTS

With regard to the first part, it is hoped to appoint a Committee: very shortly. With regard to the second part, the information now furnished by the Ministry of Food as regards the consumption of various articles has made it possible, to substitute for a somewhat hypothetical calculation as to the effect of certain economies, which has regularly appeared in the "Gazette," one of a more comprehensive and exact character. This is the only change and it is fully explained in the "Gazette" itself.
