§ Mr. HUME-WILLIAMSasked the Secretary of State for India whether officers and other ranks remitting money home through the India Office are only allowed exchange at the rate of 1s. 4d. to the rupee although the Post Office and Civil Government rate is 1s. 5d.; and, if so, what is the reason for the difference in rates?
Mr. FISHERInstructions were given to the Government of India at the beginning of December last that remittances should be made or adjusted at the rate of 1s. 5d. the rupee in respect of all payments since the 1st October last. Sterling allotments made by officers and soldiers for the benefit of their families in this country have not been increased, but the rupee recoveries from pay in India have been reduced so as to correspond with the 1s. 5d. rate.
