HC Deb 14 February 1918 vol 103 c310W
Mr. R. MACDONALD

asked the President of the Board of Education whether it is his intention, under Section 17 of the Education (No. 2) Bill, to include as possible subjects for education Grants girls' clubs the general work of which is approved as educational by the authorities specified in the Clause?

Mr. HERBERT LEWIS

It is competent for the Board, with the approval of the Treasury, to make Grants in aid of any expenditure which a local education authority may lawfully incur on providing, maintaining, or aiding educational work, under Clause 17 or any other Clause of the Bill. My right hon. Friend need not say that the whole question of education Grants is receiving his constant attention, but he cannot commit himself at present as to the objects for which, or the conditions on which, Grants may be made in future.
